Artist Statement
The Western Juniper is widespread in eastern Oregon. Extensive ‘Juniper Reclamation’ is underway to remove broad swaths of these trees from the landscape. It is justified on the basis that human intervention is needed to correct a deficiency of nature and human actions that has resulted in the expansion and density of Juniper woodlands beyond their desired state. These images draw on the traditions of landscape and documentary photography to illuminate an aspect of the changing landscape in eastern Oregon and the never-ending human drive to control nature.
