Laurel Kadas
I began this series of photos as a study of my home state. I wanted to challenge myself to see my own backyard with fresh eyes; with the intensity of someone experiencing a place for the first time. I started taking long drives by myself, going down back roads with my film camera. I was unaware at the time that I was participating in an American photographic tradition: the road trip.
My work of the past three years focuses on rural coastal and eastern areas of Oregon. I am interested in the relationship between our built environment and the natural landscape, and the evolution of Western American culture. I have also included in this series photographs taken at the Pendleton Round-Up.
The photographs were all taken on film, both medium format and 35mm.
