Artist Statement
These photographs are a selection from an ongoing series of work I’m calling “Seeing Through.” They’ve been made throughout the past three years of meandering through Portland– finding and feeling light, crouching under, peering over, and seeing through. I’m interested in finding patterns among chaos, calm within a mess, and things that are equally beautiful as they are strange. I want to make photographs that stand out from our everyday visual vernacular. A black and white image has a special ability to stop it’s viewer and draw interest because of its stark difference from reality. Can a color photograph do the same? I’ve challenged myself to try. These are photographs that I naturally feel compelled to make, and in that sense, I don’t intend to see it through as a completed project anytime soon.
