Artist Statement
Here the folded material becomes a self-generative image. The shadows of the creased material hold the memory of its past shape, looking dimensional even after returning to a flat state. I develop these images outside, letting wind, rain, dirt, and other interlopers from nature participate in the making. rnrnThese images are non-traditional photographs, using neither camera nor negative—they are essentially photograms of the material itself in varied exposure conditions. The materiality of the fabric is integral to the construction of the image, but for practical purposes for handling in the drawers, I would make C-prints of the original 8” x 10” fabric positives.rnrnMy art practice encompasses a wide variety of interdisciplinary material explorations, moving fluidly between drawing, painting, installation, video, sound, and photography. rnrnMy work explores natural phenomena, often striving to make visible the invisible. Capturing traces of light, sound, gravity, evaporation, and other visually mysterious ephemera are central to the imagery I make. I have an ongoing interest in the intermingling of a mediating hand with the reclamations made by the forces of nature.rnrnThank you for your time and consideration.
