Artist Statement
A local “murder” of crows is the subject of my original project, representing and symbolizing cultural and social beliefs, myths, folklore, and fairy tales. I transform these photographs of crows into ambiguous, ethereal, and impressionistic scenes. Although I originally viewed these images as open and dependent upon public discussion and interpretation, the crows have now become spiritual mirrors reflecting my grief and pain regarding a recent suicide within my family. They are very personal and emotional for me. They reflect my confusion and chaos, and I hope to find some meaning and healing in my artistic pursuit.
So this project, which originally began with metaphysical, and existential interpretations of crows in nature, has now become a viable paradigm incorporating decisive elements (abstract metaphors and symbols) and nuances for personal healing and utilizing self-portraiture and visuals to reflect and express my personal loss and grief.
