Freedom of expression is an important tenet, one that queer people have not always had. A platform, a place to speak, to be seen - these have not been options for many queer people. The simple act of honest representation is one that can offer confidence, a place in the historical record, and a beginning to correction of years of discrimination. Focusing on how queer people choose to express themselves, either in their tattoos, dress, or personal spaces allows for a more well-rounded exploration of queer identity as a whole.
When photographing, I was invited into people’s homes, lives, and confidences. I was offered coffee, car advice, and friendship. I talked to people who knew who they were before they had the language to describe it and people who transitioned after their 70th birthday. People shared their fears and hopes for the future, and what they believe America holds for queer people now.
