Marico Fayre

Artist Statement:

“Between one breath and the next, a moment is captured. Frozen. A story is created that will come to define the memories of a place, a day, an emotion. And it is recreated by every viewer. There is truth and fiction in every frame.

Photography is often described as a solitary art practice, but I don’t see it that way. Whether photographing myself or other people, I work directly with the power of being seen and the vulnerability and courage needed to allow yourself to be the subject/object of the gaze.

Visibility is a key to reclaiming our agency in a system that was built to make us small–or erase us completely. And it is done through many everyday choices. Land stewardship is activism. Living intentionally is activism. Creating communities that disrupt the status quo is activism. Visibility is activism. By sharing our own stories, we can begin to unwind the centuries of unquestioning oppression.

Storytelling permeates all of my endeavors. I draw upon myth, the ebb and flow of nature, poetry, psychology, and performance to explore connection and transformation, combining personal stories with universal experiences. This is my art–witnessing and creating in equal measure.”
