This body of photographs was taken at high school proms and represents a subject immediately familiar and uniquely American. Hormonal and ritualistic, high school proms are events where roles are played out among young people who find themselves in the gap between their innocence and the adults they are expected to be. This transformation fascinated us and held our attention. Rapture, euphoria and boredom were the emotional swings that swayed before us. Our pleasure as photographers was to reveal the undercurrent of the American ritual.
