The history of the plains seems almost metaphorically American to me. It has been a transient and energetic mix of openness, high spirits, tenacity and care alongside willful blindness, a taste for fast bucks, the desecration of land and the destruction of native plants, animals and peoples. In these wide spaces there is ample room for wonder, for fear and for imaginative speculation. We have stopped in them, settled them, and then have generally moved on – bringing things to the land, taking much from it, leaving things of interest behind.
