“America — First People, New People, Forgotten People” is a collaboration among Scott Nava, Tom Jones, and Tone Stockenström, each offering a powerful and intimate view into places not normally seen. Side by side images and texts offer audiences the opportunity to be face to face with people often overlooked by our society.
New People — Tone Stockenström, an immigrant from Sweden, began her project entitled: Just Because I Live In America, in 1999. This body of work is an intimate journal of the Mexican-American members of the Casteñeda-Torres family: Otilia and her three children, Lissette, Diana and German. This body of work seeks to understand their experiences of living between two cultures, of being caught in a limbo between the past and the present.
