Known mostly for his street portraits, renowned photographer Charles Traub’s series, In the Still Life, is a collection of color photographs taken over the past 20 years, his observations and stumblings upon the world of incidents and anecdotes. His poetic eye and astute sense of timing elevate the most mundane of moments to offbeat commentaries on human nature and spirit.

A distinguished writer and editor, as well, Traub is the former Director of Light Gallery, and the co-founder of here is new york, the democratic gathering of photos in response to the events of September 11, which generated over $850,000 to the Children’s Aid Society. His latest book, In the Still Life was released in Fall, 2004.

Of his photos he writes, “They reflect my continual interest in observing our passing through and our inseparability from the fictions we create about ourselves… For me, serendipity, coincidence, and chance are more interesting than any preconceived construct of our human encounters
