With qualities of stillness, silence, and clarity, Stephen Vaughan’s photographs of English and Danish Boglands resonate with connections to archeology, history, memory and myth. Opened Landscape: Lindow, Tollund, Grauballe explores three landscapes in which the bodies of Iron Age men and women, thought to be the victims of ritual human sacrifice, remained almost perfectly preserved for 2000 years until their discovery in the 20th Century. Vaughan’s richly detailed photographs show a liminal space between the known and unknown, between being and remaining. He examines both the damaged contemporary landscape and the exposed surfaces of the Iron Age and Neolithic, where the preserved layers of accumulated centuries await the peat cutter’s spade and the scrutiny of archaeologist, poet and picture-maker.
