Silent Souls

February 1, 2007 - February 24, 2007

A Pulitzer Prize winning staff photographer for The Washington Post, Carol Guzy’s Silent Souls project documents the animals, family pets, who were victims of Hurricane Katrina, and the rescue efforts by individuals who traveled across the country to New Orleans, to help save and reunite people and the animals they love. A realization emerged from the chaos acknowledging the primal depth of the human/animal bond. Folks refused to leave their submerged homes without their helpless friends. Sacrificing pets did not save people. She writes, “So many lost literally everything – home, job, friends, community and cherished possessions. For most, all that is left to hold onto is the family pet. For some, that’s all they need.”
