Marrigje de Maar
Dutch Light in China
November 6, 2008 - November 30, 2008
Marrigje de Maar shoots interiors all over the world. To her, interiors are portraits of both herself and the people living within the homes she photographs. During her trips, she knocks on doors and asks permission to come in and make pictures of people’s homes. For Dutch Light in China, de Mar traveled to China without knowing a word of Chinese. With the help of some locals, she crafted a letter noting her intentions and thus gained admittance into real daily life. De Mar believes that within their own walls, people feel safe enough to be themselves. She says, “people create their personal spaces with the help of daily utensils, memorables, and things they like or embody their dreams.” De Mar photographs home.
