Andy Freeberg Art Fare

January 3 - February 3, 2013

Long fascinated with the gallery and museum worlds, Andy Freeberg has often turned his camera on the dealers, gallery patrons, artists, museum guards and their interplay with the works of art themselves.  In Art Fare Freeberg offers us a wry view of the art industry, capturing dealers and gallery directors in conversation, negotiation and transacting the business of art. Art Fare examines art fairs for what they are: a lot of people standing around oftentimes not even looking at art.

"I was attracted not only to the people but to the combinations of art, clothing, technical devices and postures.  I found the lighting, costumes, and set designs excellent for photographing these living dioramas, where the art world plays itself."

Andy Freeberg was born in New York City and studied at the University of Michigan. He began his career as a photojournalist and now alternates his assignment work with fine art projects. His work has appeared in publications such as Time, Fortune, Der Spiegel, and Rolling Stone. His photographs are in many collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the George Eastman House Museum of Photography. He currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
