Angel O'Brien
Artist Statement
Through the collaging of many photographs and incorporating images of writing, drawings or paintings, I'm giving the viewer not simply a picture, but instead a moment in time that explores melancholy, censorship, sight/insight/blindness, daydreaming and existing in the world as a woman and mother. Though I use myself in my work and my experiences certainly influence what I create, I don't really see it necessarily as self-portraiture. These works are not meant to solely tell my story, but rather are inspired by the experiences of being a woman in the world today.
Artist Bio
Angel O'Brien is an experimental alt-process photographic artist based in Portland, Oregon. Her inspiration is the palimpsest of life, pulling in fragments of place and moment to simultaneously divulge and obscure. It is about recognizing how a moment or place intertwines with the person to create a moment in time, and then turning these into a visual memory. Using historical photographic processes (platinum-palladium, gum-bichromate, etc.) printing methods bringing to life the surrealist montages that she's known for creating. Her prints are all one of a kind pieces lovingly made by hand in her basement darkroom.
