Jo Ann Chaus
Artist Statement
This work is a distillation of my past, my mother and her past, the present, and the freedom to consider possibilities. In each image, a narrative emerges as I perform as a woman conjured from my conscious and unconscious mind. Wearing remnants from the past on my skin as I try to get inside the moments these women have lived, to better understand them, and thus myself.
In a language of gesture and gaze they speak about traditional female roles performed for the good of the family. They pay homage to all women who’ve persevered and broken barriers, courageously.
