Michele Thompson

Artist Statement

I began 2020 making new images about identity, connection to my mother, and the connection to the soil she handed down to me. But the nature of the year has changed, becoming for me one of stasis, both physically, where the boundaries of my world have constricted by quarantine; and in less tangible ways in which work, thought, imagination, relationships, anger, hope, all float, on hold seemingly without end. I find myself obliged to confront identity differently than I had imagined, creating images underpinned by my disconnectedness with others and the unreal feeling of being frozen in place and time.
