Artist Talk - May 7, 1 PM at Blue Sky

What happens to the spaces once occupied by the statues of “Idols” of the former Soviet Union and what becomes of the statues themselves? Matthew Moore photographs these remnants of the past — and the resulting impact on contemporary rural and urban places in Post-Socialist Landscapes. This exhibition, coming to Blue Sky in May 2022, seems particularly consequential as we bear witness to the horrors of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the ever-present ghosts of history. Visit Moore’s website to see more of his work.

Critical Mass 2021 Exhibition: Federico Estol’s Shine Heroes/Héroes del Brillo) continues through May

The exhibition, Shine Heroes, comes out of a project from Uruguayan artist, Federico Estol, started three years ago as he began engaging with the shoe shiners of Bolivia. Estol collaborated with sixty shoe shiners associated with the NGO newspaper "Hormigón Armado" to create a photobook. Together they planned the scenes during a series of graphic novel workshops depicting the new andean architecture of El Alto as its background. In this process, the shine heroes became both producers and protagonists of a street-style photobook to fight against a social stigma. Estol was chosen by Blue Sky’s Exhibition Committee from Photolucida’s Critical Mass 2021 finalists to receive a solo exhibition.

May Fundraiser for Ukraine

Ukrainian master photographer Alexander Chekmenev, Blue Sky Gallery, and the Ukrainian Foundation of Beaverton are teaming up to raise money for the people of Ukraine.

Twenty-four prints from Chekmenev’s powerful series of photographs, “Citizens of Kyiv” (featured recently in the New York Times Magazine), will be on view at Blue Sky Gallery from May 7 through May 28, with a special reception on Saturday, May 21 from 2 to 5 PM.

When you visit Blue Sky, for every $100 you donate to the Ukrainian Foundation of Beaverton for medical supplies and humanitarian relief, you will receive an 8.5 x11” print of your choice from this compelling series. Help support the people of Ukraine in their greatest time of need.
