Kristen Joy Emack
Cousins
Apr 6 - 29, 2023
First Thursday Opening: Apr 6, 5 - 8 PM
Artist Talk: TBA
Kristen Joy Emack’ s ongoing series Cousins chronicles the gorgeous arc of childhood. It captures the tension, beauty, humor, and closeness that exists within familial bonds. Emack has been photographing her daughter and nieces for close to a decade. Between them is an intimate and spiritual knowledge that is both ordinary and extraordinary. As they have matured, they have begun to understand that the lives of Black girls are not well documented, or widely published. While her work is not exclusively about representation, one added intention of this series is to bring forward that perspective. She hopes that when they look back on this work, they see their beauty and devotion to each other, and will find themselves here, in this work they made together, reflected with love.
2022 Critical Mass Exhibition
Liliana Guzmán
Next to Myself
Apr 6 - 29, 2023
First Thursday Opening: Apr 6, 5 - 8 PM
In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Apr 8, 1 PM
Liliana Guzmán’s exhibition Next to Myself combines painting and photography to reflect upon the formation of the self as an individual with social and ethnic components. Each piece is a culmination of layers; the photographic print, gouache paint, charcoal, and other mark-making objects. Photographic elements ground the body in a concrete physical space, while paint emphasizes what the mind perceives. Stemming from her background as a bicultural Colombian-American woman, this series addresses the sociocultural dualities of her exposure to different conceptions of the Latinx female body and how ethnicity, gender, and memory continuously build upon the many layers that make up who you are.
