Gallery Presentation: Sat, Jan 7 at 3 PM

by Diane Jonte-Pace and Michael Kevane of Friends of Africa Village Libraries

The Architecture of L’Ancien Village is a memorial exhibition that features one series of photographs by the late photographer David Pace. Pace challenged the negativity about African life and culture dominant in the western imagination through his multi-year project focused on contemporary life in a rural village in Burkina Faso in West Africa. This project illustrated its uniqueness and beauty as well as its hardships through the portraits he captured of community members in their daily activities. With this exhibition, we remember David, with gratitude for the way his photographs continue to bear witness to our time, and to the time he shared with us.

First Thursday Opening: Jan 5, 5 - 7 PM

In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Jan 7 at 1 PM

In his body of work entitled The Community, photographer Eli Durst examines the fundamental search for community in America. The activities depicted in this series range from Boy Scout meetings to New Age spiritual practices to corporate team building exercises and were all made in and around the types of multipurpose community spaces that are ubiquitous throughout the United States. These meeting places are utilitarian and functional, meant not to be glamorous but practical. While these spaces are largely interchangeable, there’s a specificity to their genericness, a familiarity in their universality. This collection of images were compiled into his first monograph, The Community,  published by Mörel Books, which received Special Mention at the Rencontre d’Arles Author Book Award.
