First Thursday Opening: Mar 7, 5 - 8 PM

In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Mar 9, 2 PM

Fazilat Soukhakian grew up in Iran where she witnessed her LGBTQ+ friends and relatives  dealing with severe discrimination and fear from not only the authorities but the (often insensible) community around them as well. After moving to Utah, she was shocked to find out that the LGBTQ+ community in certain regions of the US goes through similar struggles and challenges, both rooted in a system of self-doubt from a clash where faith and sexual orientation can’t seem to harmonize.  In 2019, she began her project Queer in Utah to help normalize the LGBTQ+ community in the conservative setting of Utah by portraying these couples in affectionate poses and a local outdoor setting, similar to the dominant imagery found framed in the households of heterosexual couples.

Mar 7 - 30, 2024

First Thursday Opening: Mar 7, 5 - 8 PM

In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Mar 9, 3:30 PM

Sarah Malakoff's large-scale color photographs investigate domestic interiors as both a refuge from and a re-creation of the outside world. In this series Personal History, she turns her attention to objects displayed within American homes that reference culture, history, and ideology. These souvenirs resonate (sometimes humorously and sometimes disturbingly) with the other possessions and architecture that surround them, uneasily vacillating between heroism and kitsch, patriotism and colonialism.
