The Arctic has always been in the dreams and nightmares of explorers, artists, and poets. Charles Xelot photographs the huge ships that carry gas, oil and building materials across the treacherous ice. Xelot’s project, White Water, conveys the magnitude of the sea and her vessels, and the gravity of the risk involved in crossing it. The breadth of the project is both grand and intimate. Along with the ships, Xelot includes portraits that convey the emotional landscape of the sailors who live for months drifting through the ice.

Nov 7 - Dec 21, 2024

First Thursday: Nov 7, 5 - 8 PM

In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Nov 9, 3 PM

Pierre Dalpé is a gay Canadian photographer who explores the ever-connected and complicated relationships between the body, identity, disguise, and performance. He is fascinated by the concept of how masking can be a way to reveal oneself. His series Wigstock shares its title with an annual outdoor drag festival in New York City. From 1984-2001, the LGBTQIA+ community gathered in numbers and created a safe environment for themselves and allies alike. During its peak in popularity from 1992-1995, Dalpé captured the adorned attendees, from cross-dressing in drag to DIY outfits and carnivalesque costumes, all had the same goal: freedom of expression. This collection is a time capsule of the challenges this community went through. It brings awareness to the issues that persist to this day, including the fight for trans rights, the battle for marriage equality, and efforts to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
