REFOCUSING: Free Salon-From-Anywhere

REFOCUSING: Free Salon-From-Anywhere on the 4th Wednesday of the Month. Join Lois Leveen and Blue Sky Gallery for a monthly program as we explore ways to redefine and strengthen community by engaging online with photographs.

On Wednesday, July 22nd, we’ll be exploring representations of black fathers in the photographs of Zun Lee and the poetry of Kevin Young. White American culture too often frames black men as threats, as criminals, as not-quite-human — or, alternately, as embodiments of physical prowess and performers:  athletes, musicians, and dancers. In this discussion, we’ll discover the power and beauty of very different images of black men. These intimate, loving portraits celebrate how black men nurture their children. As we discuss these photographs and poems, we can deepen our shared understanding and appreciation of African American experience.
