REFOCUSING: Free, online, participatory workshop — Session Three
Photography as a Lens for This Moment, This Moment as a Lens for Photography
Wednesday June 17, 5pm
Is a photograph a visually engaging work of art? Or is it a documentary object? Or both?
Many of Blue Sky’s most memorable exhibitions document particular historical moments, social movements, and political realities. As we find ourselves in this unprecedented moment, join us for a series of workshops led by facilitator Lois Leveen.
In every session, we explore how we can redefine and strengthen community by engaging online with photographs
On May 20, we explored how our experiences of the pandemic may shape the way we respond to photographs in Blue Sky’s archive
On June 3, in response to the murder of George Floyd and the worldwide response calling for racial justice, we explored how photography/videography has been used to either enforce or challenge white supremacy in the United States
On June 17, we will explore how your photographs taken between May 20 and June 15 can document and deepen our understanding of our new reality.
This session, previously scheduled for June 3, was originally defined in terms of photography and the pandemic. But the weeks between May 20 and June 3 reminded us of what every street photographer knows: you need to capture whatever is happening as it is happening. So the new call is broader. What are the defining images you are taking now, and how do they document this moment?
We invite you to share up to 10 photographs (if you already uploaded photographs prior to June 3, you are welcome to do an additional upload of new photographs; please just begin numbering the new set at 11 so we will know which set is which). We look forward to discussing uploaded images on June 17.
