Artist Statement
Early in the pandemic, the outdoors, always my sanctuary, became something even more. Wandering in the woods brought peace; a respite from the chaos around me. And then came the wildfires that devastated nearby communities. The air quality index rose well into the hazardous range. Breathing had quite simply become noxious and now I was inside looking out, as if under house arrest. I began to photograph this new reality through the windows of my home. Smoke muted the reflections that seemed to change hourly. A world distorted in yet a new way.
