Darryl Baird

I’m a career photographer, with commercial, academic, and fine art experience spanning more than 50 years of experience in making images. I’m published in multiple histories and photography survey books, and in several museum collections. I’ve retired to the Oregon coast to further my image making craft.

I love a challenge, and trying to exercise an abstract aesthetic within a medium known for realism and fidelity is what is driving my current work. To reference a whole idea, ecology, culture, or geology within a single abstract image is a level of precision of thought and form that excites me like no other genre or mode of seeing does. I model much of my work from 20th century painting, especially abstract expressionism. In this engagement, I feel like I have unfinished business with Modernism. I seek to delivery a viewpoint of an up-close experience, and less the whole subject at hand.
