Alex Harris’s captivating views of Havana through the dashboard of old American cars offer a perspective on the cultural, social and political complexities of past and present Cuba. His rich, lush color images capture the ironic imagery and symbolism through photos of dashboards and through the front windows of Fords, Plymouths, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, and Lincolns dating from 1948 to 1957, all in active circulation and helping to boost tourism. The vehicles arrived during the full splendor of the economic and cultural colonization period of the island, and they remained, trapped in the revolution. The view through the front window of these cars is also seen, resulting in a series of photos that gracefully and colorfully blend iconography from the past with documentation of present day Cuba.
