Artist Statement
The photographs that I'm submitting have all been made in relationship to the two viruses -- Covid-19 and the struggle against white supremacy. The images include people out of their homes -- some respecting safe distancing and others not so much. In addition, there are three photographs that relate directly to Black Lives Matter. These are only five of approximately 2500 that I have taken since mid-March. Hopefully, they represent different parts of living in a double-crisis.
Artist Bio
Street photography began for me over 45 years ago in Columbus, Ohio. Since that time, I have taken photographs throughout the world.. Most of this work has been near my homes in South Carolina, Cape Town, and Portland. Recently, I’ve been privileged to study with master photographers Bruce Gilden, Peter Turnley, David Alan Harvey, and Constantine Manos. Their teachings have both expanded and focused my work photographing people. This submission includes both street portraits with eye contact, and documentation people expressing themselves during the health pandemic as well as the pandemic of white supremacy.
