Artist Statement

I photograph whatever interests me, but when editing I’m always looking for metaphors and symbols. I immediately thought of how the cone flowers resembled protesters’ umbrellas as they faced off with police in June.
Other aspects of these photos make me think of the times we are experiencing. They were taken in the fall, as the desiccated, decaying garden hosts the remaining blooms from summer, ragged and abused from their struggles to represent hope and redemption. Yet they stand in defiance of their entropic environment, showing the beauty and determination that the world needs now more than it ever did.
