Artist Statement
During the pandemic lockdown, my daily walks have provided both relief and inspiration. Rather than watch the sidewalk in front of my feet, I've been gazing skyward, and find that lifting my eyes to the skies has buoyed my spirits more than I could have imagined. So I began taking my infrared camera along to capture some of the remarkable, even joyous, cloud formations I see along the way. Perhaps because of reduced pollution during the shutdown, the wispy clouds seem more pronounced than ever as they dance across the sky, providing an emotional release from earthly tribulations.
Artist Bio
A native of Ohio and an Oregonian since 1976, I've been an exhibiting fine art photographer for nearly 40 years, a pursuit started while teaching journalism and photography at the community college in Albany, OR. Now retired, I've slowly and sometimes begrudgingly transitioned from large-format photography to digital, and lately have been photographing primarily in the infrared spectrum, a hauntingly beautiful range of light. I’ve always preferred black-and-white for my work, in part because it takes me one step away from the real world. Infrared takes me a step further, transforming the ordinary into something else again.
