Out of the Drawers: Escaping, Pretending
Photography can connect as well as disconnect us from reality. The act of taking a photo can both bring us closer to what’s happening around us or separate us from the immediate moment.
This exhibition illustrates how photography can be used as escape, as fantasy, and as relief. Within the last year, escapism has become a common desire for many of us seeking to cope with worldwide, national, and local crises. By finding small moments of relief and highlighting new fantastical realities, the artists in this exhibition break the world into digestible fragments, removing viewers from the reality we’re familiar with. These images find internal and external moments of quiet and beauty, celebrate the abstract, and create new spaces to explore.
This exhibition was curated by Blue Sky intern Ruby McShane with photographs by Adam Bacher, Lisa Bauso, Rich Bergeman, Alan Chait, Meghan Crandall, John Francis, Lauren Grabelle, Lorraine Olivia Hamberger, Sophia Hatzikos, Barbara Strigel, Kelda Van Patten, and Mike Vos.
In order to provide more visibility for artists participating in our 2021 Pacific Northwest Drawers exhibition, we have turned our Library wall into a Drawers exhibition space. Exhibitions typically rotate every other month and feature prints by multiple artists at a time.
This exhibition is on view from June 16 – July 14, 2021
