WEDNESDAY Opening: Jul 3, 5 - 9 PM

In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Jul 6, 3:30 PM

While working as a peep show stripper, Cammie Toloui made unforgettable, consensual, and collaborative portraits of her customers. The Lusty Lady project was photographed in the early 90s, yet the series retains a deeply powerful urgency and importance because of how Toloui took control of and inverted the male gaze, turning it back on itself, at a time where the male gaze was an overarching dominant force within daily life, both culturally and socially. The resulting series of black and white photographs, baroque-like in their dramatic lighting, are free of any prejudice. Instead, they are compellingly imbued with a deep sense of curiosity and understanding, with each photograph revealing a broad spectrum of sexuality, fetishes, and often-private aspects of masculinity.

WEDNESDAY Opening: Jul 3, 5 - 9 PM

In-Person Artist Talk: Sat, Jul 6, 2 PM

Kristina E. Knipe’s exhibition Talisman makes the invisible - memory, desire, and dreams - visible. Their work offers details in excess - a rhinestone shimmering behind the wing of a dead cockroach, a cracked magnifying glass amplifies a passionflower, oxidation from a brass ring turns Antony’s finger green. To transgress the historic photographic ordering of society, Knipe embraces mess and its attendant spectacle. Queer ritual disrupts engrained hierarchies, rejecting outmoded classifications. In New Orleans, the altars, masquerades, and decadences create a visual and material excess that heals as it depletes. They adorn their sitters in our shared materials to create a transformative experience of pleasure.”
